The abortion debate is never far from the headlines. In 2018, more than 200,000 women in England and Wales terminated a pregnancy, but many find it hard to share their stories with even their closest friends and family. For a series on Woman’s Hour, reporter Henrietta Harrison spoke to five listeners about their personal stories. Some of them were talking about their experience for the first time…

‘Alison’
‘Alison’ fell pregnant on her honeymoon 40 years ago. Both she and her husband had just started new jobs and she felt it was the wrong time to have a baby.
‘Amanda’
‘Amanda’ had an abortion in the 1970’s, a few years after the procedure was made legal. Pro-life campaigners see abortions as ending life whereas Amanda says she did not feel that way.
